About oral maxillofacial surgery / oral surgery

Oral and maxillofacial surgeons specialise in the diagnosis, investigations, and treatment of diseases affecting the mouth, jaws, salivary glands, face and neck.

Maxillofacial surgeons are unique in requiring a dual qualification in both medicine and dentistry. Prof. Leo Stassen is trained and works in both areas. The specialty is the bridge between medicine and dentistry, treating conditions that require expertise from both backgrounds. His work is in oral surgery, oral medicine and oral and maxillofacial surgery.

Professor Stassen studied at Trinity College Dublin, graduating in 1977 (First place) in dentistry and then again in 1980 in medicine. He moved to the UK, as there was no OMFS training in Ireland at the time, where he trained as an oral and maxillofacial surgeon (OMFS), at leading hospitals in Newcastle, Manchester, Liverpool, Glasgow, and Bombay India, leading to his appointment in 1990, at 35 years, as a Consultant Surgeon in Sunderland. From 1990 – 2003, Leo became a recognised leader in orthognathic, cleft, and cranio-facial surgery in the UK, representing his Association and the Faculty in many prestigious national roles. He was instrumental in setting up the oral cancer awareness programme.

In 2003, he fulfilled his dream and was appointed Professor and Chair of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at Trinity College Dublin based in the National Maxillofacial Unit, St. James, and the Dublin Dental University Hospital. From almost nothing, he developed the public OMFS, mouth, head and neck service in St James / DDUH, led a very talented multidisciplinary paramedical OMFS mouth, head and neck team, and was part of the weekly Consultant MDT meeting. His team and he looked after more than 50% of the mouth cancers in Ireland.

Leo has published extensively in OMFS, presented all over the World and trained many very able surgeons. He is committed to education in surgery, medicine and dentistry (See Linkedin)

He has served as Honorary Editor of several prestigious publications including the Journal of the Irish Dental Association (2005 – 2018) and the British Journal of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. (96 – 99), having learned the ropes as the BJOMS Assistant, and Deputy Editor for 6 years.
